Ladies and Girls Cricket Thriving

Ashton on Mersey CC (AOMCC) will again be providing a Ladies team in 2017, playing in the Cheshire Women’s Cricket League (CWCL).  This follows a first season at their new home, the ladies choosing AOMCC on the basis they had the vision and infrastructure where they could play an active role and enjoy themselves.

The Club has become the go to place for ladies and girls cricket.  In summer 2016, the Club were proud to host two MCC ladies matches, one with a Cheshire XI including AOMCC players.  And the early season Lancs Ladies warm up match against an AOM Open XI is an annual event.

This followed other initiatives by the club in developing cricket opportunities for girls.  In 2014, an U11s team won through to the Regional Finals of the Lady Taverner’s competition.  In 2015, the U13s team reached the same level.  The girls contributed to mixed U15s and U11s matches in the South Manchester Junior Cricket League and also in girls U15s matches in the CWCL.  And the girls mixed with ladies at the Womens Cricket Festival in South Manchester Sept 2015 (click here to see photos).

Historical reporting

By way of a welcome, the Ladies played a Select XI at the end of August 2015 in a friendly T20 at “the Beets” (see photo below).

AOMCC are featured in the Cheshire Cricket Board’s Wheatsheaf World Vol 11 August 2014 (DOWNLOAD HERE) or alternatively viewed via THIS LINK to the CCB website.  The article refers to our assistance in the development of girls cricket in South Manchester, including forging links with other local clubs to allow competition as Trafford teams in local girl specific pairs cricket events.  A highlight of the summer was playing in the Lady Taverners tournament at U11s and U13s.  Plans for the girls include indoor cricket matches against boys teams and other girls teams in the winter, together with summer coaching and matches around various clubs to create a synergy in development of the sport for girls in the area.
